The Aerospace Engineering Area of the University of León has participated in the IX Meeting on Space Telecommunications organized by HISPASAT at the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) in Santander on June 28 and 29, 2018.
The meeting addresses the current state of the space communications sector, bringing together the most important stakeholders, both national and international. First executives of the companies that build, launch and operate the satellites discussed for two days about the main concerns that affect the sector.
In this context, professor Jesús Gonzalo has contributed with his particular vision of the future use of the stratosphere as an operational space for communications platforms in remote places, temporarily saturated or that have suffered a natural catastrophe. Dr. Gonzalo shared the debate with the heads of programs such as Zephyr of Airbus, Loon of Google and Stratobus of Thales-Alenia, in a meeting at the highest international level.
Apart from the irruption of stratospheric systems, where the University of León occupies an internationally recognized position, the so-called 'new space' took part of the interventions. In this new environment, investors until now outside the business enter with force and accelerate initiatives that facilitate access to satellites and launchers, which opens numerous industrial opportunities and research.
The initiative of HISPASAT, which has managed to bring together the most influential actors, highlights the recent convulsions of the sector and the excellent position of the Spanish industry in this field full of opportunities in the short term.
